Frequently asked questions...
Is girl's lacrosse dangerous?
-
Girls Lacrosse is a contact, but not collision, sport. The equipment and rules for Girls Lacrosse are designed and implemented for the safety of the players.
When is lacrosse season?
-
The high school season runs from the beginning of February through the middle of May.
-
Off season training continues year round.
What equipment does my daughter need?
-
A girls lacrosse stick, goggles, cleats (soccer, football or lacrosse all work) and a colored mouth guard (not white or clear).
Where can I buy this equipment?
-
You can purchase a stick through coach Brian, hboilersgirlslax@gmail.com.
-
A Sisu mouthguard (or something equivalent) is advised for easier breathing, talking and overall comfort.
-
I do not advise a specific type of goggles. Comfort is the key for goggles.
-
Locally, Monkey Sports in Irvine is the best way to feel anything physically. Online is often best pricing.

Must my daughter have any prior experience?
-
Absolutely not! Lacrosse is one of the fastest growing sports in the country and it is new to most of us. All we ask is that all participants bring effort, a positive attitude, and a willingness to learn. And the best thing about lacrosse is that it can be picked up at any age.
-
Athletes make great lacrosse players.
What if my daughter plays another sport or activity?
-
As an organization, we know the importance of balance and encourage our players to be well-rounded students, athletes, artists, etc. We do not require our players to choose between activities. We simply require that you prioritze lacrosse when possible and are able to communicate in advance if you are going to miss practices or games. This ensures the best experience for your daughter and everyone else as well.
How many teams will you have and do you make cuts?
-
We will have a minimum of a JV and Varsity team.
-
We would like to support a second JV team, which if needed, may only be viable with parent volunteers.
-
We will make cuts if we are unable to appropriately serve all interested players.

What is the practice schedule?
-
Mostly, Mon-Fri 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm
-
This is subject to change based on coaches and field availability.
What is the game schedule?
-
We are allowed to play up to a 20-game schedule starting on February 15th and usually play on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and occasionally Saturdays. Once published, usually in October, The season schedule can be found on our website https://www.hboilersgirlslax.org/calendar.
Where are practices and home games held?
-
Practices are held on campus but could be on any field (miller turf, upper grass, lower grass, stadium, etc.).
-
Home games are held on campus, mostly at the Stadium, but sometimes on Miller.

How do players get to away games?
-
We usually arrange with the school district to rent busses for all away games. Occassionally this is not possible.
What if my daughter has to miss a practice?
-
Communication (advanced when possible) is the key!
-
Prioritzing lacrosse around anything else that can be planned is necessary, so that when an emergency or illness arises (which is common), a player is not missing more than needed.
Do you provide uniforms?
-
Yes, we will provide each player with a practice pinnie and uniform at the beginning of the season. This is provided as part of the family donation. We ask that you care for them during the year and return them in good condition at the close of the season.
Is Girls Lacrosse a CIF sport?
-
Yes, CIF voted to make Girls Lacrosse a CIF sport in 2019.
How is the program funded?
-
The program is funded exclusively by parent contribution and fundraising. The school provides the fields and covers the cost of referees and two, in season, coaching stipends . However, it does not cover the costs for equipment, uniforms, practice pinnies, busses, athletic trainers, a year-end banquet, team building events or (off season and additional) coaches.
Will my daughter get playtime?
-
It depends on the team. The goal is to have everyone in the program earn playing time. Attitude, effort, attendance, etc. can all impact playing time positively or negatively.
What can my daughter do to improve outside of practice?
-
Play more! Nothing replaces experience. There are several local lacrosse clubs that run programs during the off season.
-
Wall ball, shooting, working out, etc.
-
You Tube is full of instructional videos and playing wall ball is highly encouraged.

When can we purchase spirit wear?
-
We will have an on-line spirit wear store open a few times throughout the year.
What is your coaching philosophy?
-
Lacrosse is about having fun working hard to improve so that all players are self empowered strong and confident young women. Creating a positive connection to Huntington Beach High School and the surrounding community is also critical to a healthy society. Winning games is a by- product of these things.

Are there any other events that are required?
-
Yes, we will volunteer and sometimes funraise as a team as well as a pre-season team bonding event and a pre season local tournament or two (covered in the player contribution budget), and our year-end banquet.
-
Optionally, there are other events that we invite our players to attend including team dinners, additional team bonding events, field trips to watch USC and Pomona-Pitzer College Women’s Lacrosse games, etc. These add to the fun!
Do you need volunteers?
-
YES! A program this size needs lots of helping hands.
